North Eastern MPs defend IEBC commissioner Yakub Guliye

The MPs led by Keynan and Duale.

MPs from North Eastern region on Wednesday convened a press conference in Parliament and defended IEBC Commissioner Yakub Guliye who is among the electoral body’s officials NASA leader Raila Odinga wants ejected from office.

The MPs who were led by Parliament Majority Leader Aden Duale and Eldas MP Aden Keynan said Raila has no mandate to force members of the IEBC out of office.

“We condemn the persistent attacks on the persona of senior civil servants from Northern Kenya communities by NASA leaders,” Keynan said.

“It is intolerable that the leaders have made it their business to character-assassinate and demand for the removal from office of many renown professionals from this region. These included the former IEBC chairman Isaack Hassan and former IEBC commissioner Eng [Abdulahi] Sharawe and many others who were unceremoniously removed out of office because of the NASA leaders’ utterances.”

Keynan said attacks on the persona of Mr Guliye and Commissioner Boya Molu is a continuation of NASA’s habitual profiling of senior public servants from Northern Kenya communities and “we can’t stomach it anymore.”

“We are telling NASA leaders to leave our civil servants alone. Professionals from Northern Kenya just like other Kenyans have all the rights to work in any capacity in this country and we will never allow anyone to ethnically profile them.”

Duale on his part said IEBC commissioners can only be removed from office with strict adherence to the law.

“Commissioners can only be removed from office in accordance with the Constitution’s Article 251 and not through street protest led by Raila Odinga,” the Garissa Township MP said.

“Odinga cannot be allowed to profile public servants from the region as we shall defend our own just like he defends his community’s members in public service.”

Raila since the Supreme Court ruling which nullified President Uhuru Kenyatta’s re-election has maintained the October 17 repeat election will not be conducted with the IEBC as currently constituted.

He says the first to leave office should be IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba who he squarely blames for manipulating the August 8 poll in favour of Jubilee.
